Has the Cost of College Reached a Tipping Point? – Head Count – The Chronicle of Higher Education.
I’m going to continue to use this blog to educate and empower students and their families as it relates to the college choice process. The Chronicle of Higher Ed is a great resource, but I will do the heavy lifting for you:) Cost of attendance continues to be a concern. Educate yourself. Use your money to influence the kind of experience you want to have. Let your dollars to the talking, and hold colleges accountable for the education they provide.
Please, share this with someone who needs to see it.
Regards,
Dr. Anthony

I think that in general, for at least a few years now (post recession) the cost of higher education has indeed past that tipping point. But I don’t consider it, necessarily, on a per-school basis. More on a per-student basis.
The fact seems to be, these days, that for the majority of students that achieve a four year degree (indeed, even some graduate degrees) both their immediate and long term burden might have outweighed the positives of attending college.
Speaking from an opportunity cost standpoint, many students would be served well to just get jobs/experience right out of high school as there are tons of students that graduate only to obtain jobs for which their degrees help none. Over time their degrees MIGHT (as this hasn’t really been proven yet) aid them in obtaining higher total career earnings, but at what cost?
It seems to me debt, in particular student debt especially as it can’t be wiped via bankruptcy, etc., is the new slavery. A new serfdom if you will…
